How clear targets improve player focus

I’ve been thinking about how much easier it is to follow a game when there is a clear target involved. Players seem more focused and their decisions look quicker and more confident. But in situations where they are just trying to hold a lead, that same clarity disappears. It feels like they start second guessing themselves more often. I’m curious if this difference in focus is something that has been studied or explained somewhere.

I remember reading https://programminginsider.com/the-psychology-of-chasing-vs-defending-totals/ , and it directly addresses this. The main idea is that a clear target gives direction, which helps players stay focused and act with confidence. Without that structure, as in defending, uncertainty increases and can lead to hesitation. That difference in mental clarity often explains why performance looks more stable during chasing situations.
