CSGO Float Range: 5 Wear Categories and Why Decimals Matter

If you searched csgo float range, the short answer is that every CS2 skin has a hidden wear number, usually between 0.00 and 1.00. Lower is cleaner, higher is more scratched and faded. The part that trips people up is that the number is not just cosmetic. On the right skin, a tiny difference such as 0.071 versus 0.079 can change the exterior label, the look in-game, and sometimes the resale price.


I have seen plenty of players buy a skin because it says Factory New, then realize it has a 0.0699 float and looks noticeably rougher than the clean screenshots they expected. The exterior tag is useful, but the actual float is what you should inspect before spending money.

The standard float ranges

For most skins, CS2 sorts wear into these five exterior categories:

* Factory New: 0.00 to 0.07


* Minimal Wear: 0.07 to 0.15


* Field-Tested: 0.15 to 0.38


* Well-Worn: 0.38 to 0.45


* Battle-Scarred: 0.45 to 1.00

Those ranges explain the label, but they do not tell the whole story. A 0.001 AK-47 | Slate and a 0.068 AK-47 | Slate are both Factory New. In a market listing, though, the 0.001 version can attract collectors because it is unusually clean. For a common skin, that premium may only be a couple of dollars. For a desirable knife, glove, souvenir skin, or rare pattern, it can be far bigger.

The practical lesson is simple: do not stop at the exterior name. Check the decimal.

What people get wrong about skin wear

The biggest mistake is assuming every skin can exist in every condition. They cannot. Each paint finish has its own minimum and maximum possible float.

The AWP | Asiimov is a famous example. Its float range starts around 0.18, so it cannot be Factory New or Minimal Wear. The cleanest possible Asiimov is still Field-Tested. A low 0.18 or 0.19 float AWP | Asiimov usually looks much better than a 0.35 version, even though both carry the same Field-Tested label.

AK-47 | Redline is another useful one to remember. Its range begins at 0.10, meaning there are no Factory New Redlines. Minimal Wear is the cleanest exterior available. Players who do not know this occasionally see a 0.10 Minimal Wear Redline listed above ordinary MW prices and assume the seller is dreaming. Sometimes the premium is justified because that float is close to the skin's true floor.

On the other end, skins such as the Glock-18 | Fade have a narrow float range that affects their appearance differently. A low float matters, but the fade percentage and pattern also matter a lot. You can have two Factory New Fades with similar wear, yet one is worth much more because it has a better fade distribution.

Float is not pattern, seed, or sticker value

This is where newer traders lose money. Float, paint seed, and sticker placement are separate things.

Float controls wear. It affects scratches, darkening, fading, and how worn a finish looks. Pattern seed controls the arrangement of a pattern-based finish. On skins like Case Hardened, Doppler, Fade, Crimson Web, and certain marble or camouflage finishes, pattern can matter more than the float.

For example, a low-float AK-47 | Case Hardened is not automatically a blue gem. The float may be 0.01, but its seed could show mostly gold and gray. Meanwhile, a higher-float version with a strong blue pattern can be vastly more valuable.

Stickers are their own rabbit hole too. A regular Field-Tested AK-47 | Redline might sell around its normal market price, while one with four desirable older event stickers can cost much more. Do not pay a float premium just because a seller points at stickers, and do not pay a sticker premium just because a seller mentions a 0.00 float. Separate each value factor in your head.

Why tiny float differences can cost real money

The closer a skin is to an exterior boundary, the more important the exact number becomes. Take a Minimal Wear skin at 0.149. It is still MW, but it is almost Field-Tested. If the same skin is available at 0.071, I would nearly always choose the 0.071 version if the price gap is reasonable.

That is especially true for finishes that show wear harshly. White skins, light blue skins, and high-contrast designs can look radically different within one exterior tier. A 0.08 USP-S | Printstream may look clean, while a 0.14 version can show enough wear that I would rather buy a decent Field-Tested skin at a discount.

On cheap skins, a low float is often a nice bonus rather than a reason to overpay. If an ordinary Minimal Wear M4A1-S | Decimator costs roughly $4 to $8, paying an extra dollar for a clean 0.07 can be reasonable if you plan to use it. Paying triple because it has five zeroes after the decimal usually is not.

On expensive items, the calculation changes. A very low float knife or glove can have collector value, particularly if it ranks close to the lowest known examples. But that requires actual demand. A 0.0004 float on an unpopular Battle-Scarred-looking finish is not guaranteed to create a jackpot.

How I check a float before buying

My routine is boring, but it prevents bad purchases:

* Check the exact float, not only Factory New or Minimal Wear.


* Compare it with the skin's allowed minimum and maximum range.


* Inspect the skin in-game if possible, especially around the edges and magazine.


* Look for scratches that are visible during normal play, not only on a market thumbnail.


* Check whether the skin has pattern value or stickers that change the price.


* Compare several listings in the same exterior before accepting a premium.

For normal play skins, I usually aim for low Minimal Wear or clean Field-Tested. They are often the best value. A 0.16 Field-Tested skin can look nearly as clean as Minimal Wear, while costing noticeably less. Conversely, a 0.37 Field-Tested item can be close to Well-Worn and may look rough enough that the saving is not worth it.

Cases, unboxings, and the random part

A case opening gives you a skin finish and a float within that finish's allowed range. You cannot force an AWP | Asiimov into Factory New because its float cap is built into the item. You also cannot assume opening a rarer item means it will have a rare float.

The random selection side of case openings is separate from wear evaluation. The general concept behind Random number generation is relevant here, because a random outcome can produce a clean float or a rough one, but it does not create a predictable streak you can exploit. Opening ten bad-float skins does not make a low float "due" on the next case.

Learn the special ranges for popular skins such as the Asiimov and Redline. And never assume Factory New means equally clean across all listings.

My own rule is this: for a play skin, I pay a small premium for a float I can actually notice. For a collector skin, I research the range, the pattern, the demand, and comparable listings before paying extra. That approach saves more money than chasing every 0.00 decimal that appears on the market.
